So the recession’s still going on, but plumbers, plasterers, bricklayers, metal workers, carpenters, electricians, tilers and other tradesmen are still in demand. Major companies, especially the supermarkets are continuing to expand and they need skilled workers in these building projects to ensure the highest quality. House repairs and home improvements continues to be a major part of the market even though the number of new builds has declined recently.

A lack of young people going into the trades is still a major problem for the industry and experienced plumbers in some areas take home wages over £70,000 annually. Although it takes a few years to build up a business and reputation, new entrants can look forward to a well paid career for life.

In our current economic climate finding a job is becoming more and more difficult. Students are now graduating to find that there are simply not enough jobs available for them. Nobody wants to hire students with no experience. A question many people are asking is: How do we gain experience, if no one is willing to employ us? This is an ever-growing chain of events which is leaving the younger generation disheartened with the world of work and training.  Apprenticeships are on there way in once again, the building sector is now seeing a rise of young individuals showing interest in training up to be a tiler, plumber and plasterer. Plumbing over the years has become a much sort after industry. In the 1980’s tradesmen were in abundance and many school leavers left school gained apprenticeships and became skilled plumbers. Unfortunately by the 1990’s employers became scarce in employing school leavers under apprenticeships leaving a decline in the industry for young skilled plumbers. This then has had the adverse effect where now a day’s people and businesses are crying out for plumbers. Due to the shortage of skilled plumbers has led to a major amount of plumbers being able to command very good wages and extortionate prices for the work that they undertake.
