Still a good time to learn a trade

So the recession’s still going on, but plumbers, plasterers, bricklayers, metal workers, carpenters, electricians, tilers and other tradesmen are still in demand. Major companies, especially the supermarkets are continuing to expand and they need skilled workers in these building projects to ensure the highest quality. House repairs and home improvements continues to be a major part of the market even though the number of new builds has declined recently.

A lack of young people going into the trades is still a major problem for the industry and experienced plumbers in some areas take home wages over £70,000 annually. Although it takes a few years to build up a business and reputation, new entrants can look forward to a well paid career for life.

City and Guilds qualifications remain popular choices for new starters and approved centres can be found around the country.

It’s also important for those within the trades already to keep their skills up to date, especially as technology and regulation changes.
